Synopsis

Born in the heart of a New Town built by Asian refugees, Mai-Anne Nguyen grew up in the long shadow of her parents' sacrifices. Caught between the heavy silences of an exiled father and the unspoken trauma of a broken lineage, she played the role of the perfect student.

But when expectations become a cage, Mai-Anne walks away from it all. Armed only with a sketchbook and a few fragments of memory, she sets out to find her missing brother through the bars of Paris and the depths of her own history.

Derrière le livreBehind the book

L'exil comme ADNExile as DNA

This project was born from a vital need to visualize a silence that has lasted for fifty years. As a second-generation child of the Vietnamese exile, I grew up in a paradox: a material abundance provided by survivor parents, yet an emotional famine inherited from their traumas. My intention is to portray exile not as a past historical event, but as a living organism that continues to mutate within children born in France.

L'art graphique comme témoinGraphic art as witness

The choice of the graphic novel allows me to let the intimate and the universal coexist. I wanted sensory details (the scent of Tiger Balm, the anatomy of a pho, the herbs from the garden) to serve as cultural bridges. Drawing becomes an investigative tool: it allows me to reconstruct fragments of my parents' memories while illustrating the raw freedom of today's Parisian art scene.

At the heart of the book lies the notion of being a triple exile: far from the country of origin, far from a family that rejects difference, and far from oneself by dint of playing a role. Mai Petite Saigon does not seek to settle scores, but to offer a reconciliation. It is an invitation to look at the source of parental anxiety to better break free from it.
