Vietnamese Graphic Novel ‘My Little Saigon’ on Kickstarter: A Journey of Art, Identity, and Defying Expectations
“My Little Saigon”: A Powerful Graphic Novel Exploring Immigrant Identity, Artistic Pursuit, and Family Dynamics Launches on Kickstarter
PARIS–
Artist Anh-Thy (Nayth) has launched a Kickstarter campaign for “My Little Saigon,” a deeply personal graphic novel delving into the multifaceted experiences of second-generation Asian immigrants in France. The story intimately follows Mai-Anne, a young woman navigating the complexities of cultural duality, the pressures of family expectations, and her determined pursuit of a career as an artist.
Born into a Vietnamese family in a quiet French town – a place that felt like her own “little Saigon” with its welcoming refugee community – Mai-Anne finds herself caught between two worlds. Shaped by family traumas and societal expectations, she makes the courageous decision to abandon a conventional path to embrace her artistic passion, seeking a sense of belonging and self-expression. “My Little Saigon” unfolds through a compelling dual narrative, seamlessly weaving Mai-Anne’s present-day struggles within the Parisian art scene with poignant flashbacks to her childhood, offering glimpses into Vietnamese culture and cherished family folklore, hinting at the echoes of war within the diaspora.
“‘My Little Saigon’ is more than just a story about cultural identity; it’s a reflection on the universal journey of finding one’s place and the courage it takes to defy expectations and pursue your dreams,” says Anh-Thy. “Through Mai-Anne’s story, I also explore why we create art and what remains to be discovered through it. I hope this highest quality book resonates with anyone who has ever felt the pull of different worlds or the yearning to forge their own path.”
The Kickstarter campaign offers a range of exclusive rewards to bring this vision to life in a deluxe edition, including digital and print copies of the book, exclusive art prints, stickers, and the unique opportunity to have your avatar illustrated onto a beautifully detailed map of Vietnam imbued with family stories.
