Humanity has been walled in and maintained in an artificial peace for centuries. When the walls come down and titanic creatures swoop in and devour every human being they come across, age-old certainties crumble. The survivors, who are now confined to the last entrenchments of the city, are organized into battalions to repel the invader and regain their freedom. The main hero, Eren Yeager, a young man fueled by rage after witnessing his mother's brutal death at the hands of a Titan, leads the charge. He is accompanied by his friends Mikasa Ackerman, a strong and loyal young woman, and Armin Arlert, a brilliant strategist. What they discover on their journeys is that there is a larger world beyond the walls they grew up on, even beyond the island where they are trapped, and that even more vicious enemies await them on the mainland!
The anime popularized the use of high-speed animation with characters able to slalom between buildings with agility. The vertigo of scrolling through the scenery at very high speeds with an almost first-person view was a very fashionable effect later on. Rather than going to an amusement park, let's watch an anime, the illusion is almost perfect.
It is an original and dark universe, which creates an oppressive and unsettling atmosphere under a twilight sky. All the survivors of Paradise Island form a military society to face this titanic threat and the heroes, Eren, Mikasa and Armin are surrounded by a very large and diverse Survey Corps squad. But it's a massacre, most of the characters will serve as feasts to the Titans during the numerous skirmishes of the series. We barely have time to get acquainted with them when they get shredded by one of these monsters during a mission outside the walls. The story surprises us several times with unexpected twists, revelations and turns of events.
The concept of freedom in the world of Attack on Titan is like a big Russian doll that you unbox as you go along. The so-called freedom regained after pushing the Titans out of the walls turns out to be a huge farce. Beyond the walls, there is the sea, immense, as far as the eye can see. Their home village was isolated on an island. Far beyond the sea is the mainland and the enemy nations that seek to burn the island of Paradise to the ground. And long before the time the heroes live, there is Ymir, the original Titan who has chained his people to a cruel destiny. How to free oneself from this web of multiple chains? This is the fundamental question that angry and withdrawn teenager Eren must answer.
It is a scene of carnage! Shiganshina is the first district to fall under the sharp teeth of the Titans. Furious battles are raging, Eren, transformed into the Attack Titan thanks to the power bequeathed to him by his father, confronts all the Primordial Titans who have come from the mainland to take down Paradise Island! The entire squad of the Survey Corps is there to support him, equipped with their maneuvering gear that allows them to soar through the air!
