How To

The collection of references always comes first. It is necessary to make an exhaustive list of the various ideas which can feed the final visual. You gather all your photos on your table and you start placing each element randomly (first of all, the moving castle, for example) and imagine how it could interact with the others. Make it alive and give it a proper existence in the scene to provide the link that gives the magic of a Worldmap! This is the step I prefer.
Cleaning up the sketch is a bit of a laborious step in the illustration process. Sometimes, for later Worldmaps, I skip the sketch and go straight to the final layout to save a lot of time. Each line is meticulously drawn, clear and limpid, so as to have a professional rendering, to give the illusion of an official drawing. It is necessary to have a sufficiently strong self-confidence to obtain a drawing that has character.
At this stage, all that remains is to transfer the different colors of the original material onto my own drawing. There is no particular creative effort involved, but just like the research phase, it is necessary to go through a fairly large number of references to find all the necessary documentation information for an accurate rendering.
